It is impossible to talk about the M. Chapoutier company without referring to 1808, the year it all began. Let’s put the year in context and look at what has happened since then. It was almost 210 years ago...

Our Story

1808
Creation of ‘Calvet et Compagnie’ in the Rue de l’Hermitage in Tain.
1855
The premises were made over to Octave Calvet and Frédéric Vogelgesang, who remained partners until 1878.
1883
The company was bought by Rodolphe Delépine.

1897
Marius Chapoutier joined forces with Rodolphe Delépine to found the company ‘Delépine et Chapoutier’, exporting wines to Holland, Switzerland and Germany.
1922
Rodolphe Delépine, who had been responsible for the accounts, retired. Marius changed the name of the company to ‘Chapoutier et Compagnie’.
1928
Marius bought the La Ciboise property (1.15 hectares) from the literary gure Robert Monier de la Sizeranne.

1929

Death of Marius. His son Marc succeeded him and took over the business.
1937

1955
Seeking to personalise the business, Marc Chapoutier gave it the name it still bears – ‘M. Chapoutier’.
1989
Winemaker Michel Chapoutier created the rst ‘plot selections’ or Sélections Parcellaires.
1990
Michel Chapoutier became head of the company and began to apply his belief in biodynamic cultivation.

First winegrowing estate bought in Australia.
2000
First estate bought in the Roussillon area of France.
2007
First purchase of vines in Portugal.
New M. CHAPOUTIER production site in Tain l’Hermitage
2009
Installation in Alsace and inauguration of new production site in Tain.
2014
Acquisition of a sales cellar in the Paul Bocuse covered market in Lyon.
2015
Installation in both the Beaujolais and Provence areas of France. Acquisition of Maison Trenel, an estate in the Gard département (in Valliguières), and a hotel complex in Tain.
2016
First purchase of vines in Spain, and acquisition of a sales cellar in the covered market in Avignon.
2017
Acquisition of an estate in the Gard département (in Montfrin) and an estate within the Crozes-Hermitage AOC area.

Mathilde and Maxime brought a new generation in to join Corinne and Michel Chapoutier and perpetuate the tradition of a family business, continuing to share a very particular vision of the world of wine – a philosophy based on the concept of ‘terroir’, continuing to uphold the convictions that make ‘M. Chapoutier’ the most admired brand name in French wines worldwide
